At least thirteen individuals killed and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
